Thank you Parents for a PERFECT Attendance at Tuesday night's Parent Teacher Conferences! It was great to catch up with each of the families who were able to attend. I cannot wait for tonight's conferences!

I had quite the array of questions and comments! Thanks for coming prepared! One recurrent question was "how often should we be reading in our child's reading folder?" My goal for each student is to read at least 3-4 nights per week. Some families choose to read every night.... which is great!! Thank you for an outstanding support toward your child's education!

When it comes to homework, my hopes are that families are able to allow 15-20 minutes per night 5* per week on reading and math support at home!! Please feel free to vary this to meet your child's needs! Your child's demeanor will tell you a lot about how much they are willing to do at home!! Some kiddos are excited to do homework each night and look forward to a challenge; whereas some children dread doing homework!! Find a "happy medium" that suits you and your child's needs!!
Thanks for all you do!!

Happy Halloween!!!

We had a great holiday celebration! The PBIS team organized a "Fall Dance" for our students. We had fun dancing and running around the gym, parading around school in our costumes, and then we continued the celebration in our classroom. See the pictures below for the "spooky snack" that we constructed using milk cartons and graham crackers!!

Special Snack?!

All day long, the class was guessing what type of special snack we would have! They knew in advance that they would be responsible for making the snack! They really started wondering when I asked them to keep their milk cartons during lunch!!
The snack we made was "haunted houses!" Check it out:

Lead 21

We had 11 projects return to school! It is amazing to see how inventive our students are. I hope you were able to check out our projects in the hallway this week!

New comprehension strategies we learned this week are:

Distinguishing Fact and Opinion.Facts and be proven... They are TRUEOpinions are our own thoughts and beliefs. Often, an opinion will say "I think..."

Ask and Answer QuestionsAsking questions and looking for answers in the text or pictures will help you understand what you read!

Fluency.... Fluency... Fluency.... We have been reading guided reading books, reading passages, and almost any text we can to increase our reading fluency! The first step in increasing fluency is to read accurately! Good thing we have leveled reading books!

To help our fluency, we practice reading the book 3 ways. We read the pictures, Read the words, and ReRead the story! When working in your child's Reading Folder at home, please be sure that your child is reading the book at least 3 times before you send them back for a new book!!

Math

We have been continuing to count up and back on the number line using the strategy called "frames and arrows". This is not an easy task! We have been using + and - signs to help us distinguish between counting "up" or "back" on the number line! I don't know if we quite realize yet that what we are doing is ADDING and SUBTRACTING!! Such smart first graders!! They were extremely disappointed on Wednesday when we did not have math class due to our Halloween Festivities!!

Social Studies

We have been learning All About Earth this past few weeks! We have been studying maps, globes, etc. Our friend Ty left for New Mexico to visit his older sister! The class was curious about where New Mexico was so it was extremely handy to be able to pull out our "Atlas" to find exactly where Ty is at!!
